The Kanpur Police had claimed on April 24 8212; and also before the CMM 8212; that Rafiq was shot twice in the head as he was taking a five-member police team to a safe house in Kanpur8217;s Govind Nagar locality, where he had allegedly stored an AK-47 rifle and a pistol.

Around 12:30 am, three persons on a motorcycle attacked the police party from behind near Juhi Yard. The police had just got down from the jeep and were going towards the house.

They first exploded a crude bomb, causing burn injuries to some policemen, and created lots of smoke to reduce visibility. Kidwai Nagar Station Officer Anil Kumar Singh, who was leading the team, was also shot in the foot. Then one of them fired at Rafiq 8212; one of the bullets hit Rafiq on the head before exiting through his right eye, killing him.
