With controversy surrounding Pratibha Patil8217;s candidature, NDA convener George Fernandes undertook an urgent mission to Mumbai last night. He called on his old friend Bal Thackeray to persuade him to reverse his decision to support the UPA-Left nominee. Sena sources said Fernandes failed to make Thackeray change his mind, who told the senior JDU leader that 8220;it is not possible8221;.

The mission reflected a changed NDA strategy to try persuasion instead of threats to take the BJP8217;s ally on board. BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde and Maharashtra BJP president Nitin Gadkari had taken tough postures after Thackeray announced his decision on June 25. Munde had charged the Sena chief with betrayal while Gadkari had said 8220;it would be difficult for us to continue with them8221;.

After the failed attempt, Fernandes on Saturday wrote a letter to Thackeray making a public appeal to vote for an 8220;independent, honest and capable person8221; instead of succumbing to wishes of Sonia Gandhi, who wanted a 8220;rubber stamp8221; in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

8220;By appealing to very narrow parochial sentiments in supporting Patil, you are condoning the fact that this nominee of the Congress is part of a financial bungling and siphoning of funds from a mismanaged co-operative bank to the benefit of her close family members,8221; Fernandes wrote to Thackeray.

8216;Don8217;t agree with Patil on everything8217;

New Delhi: General secretary of CPI A B Bardhan has expressed his disagreement with UPA presidential candidate Pratibha Patil8217;s 1975 comments as Maharashtra Health Minister on forced sterilisation for people with hereditary diseases. 8220;I am not called upon to support her views and beliefs,8221; Bardhan told Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN. 8220;8230;I don8217;t agree with everything she says or does,8221; he said but felt that she should not be clearing the air or apologising for her past comments.
