Tejeswani claims sixth gold

Not just the medals, rifle shooter pleased with her scores too

.

Tejeswani Sawant of Maharashtra won her sixth gold medal of the meet today when she clinched the team and individual double in the 50m sport rifle three-position event at the 33rd National Games here. She had earlier won both the team and individual gold on offer in 10m air rifle and 50m prone events.

And her performance here has made Indian team coach Sunny Thomas praise the Maharashtra shooter no end. 8220;This is one event here Indian shooters are a little below par, especially in standing position,8221; said Thomas. 8220;But her performance today was really commendable,8221; he added.

For Tejeswani, it was not the medals or the competition that mattered. Only the scores did. And 686.7 and 99.7 was not below her expectation today.

8220;The scores were very satisfying, but more importantly I was happy with the way I handled the pressure. The competition was more within oneself to shoot the perfect score,8221; said Tejeswani.

And the field, minus Anjali Bhagawat and Suma Shirur, was by no means a weak one. 8220;Yes Anjali didi and Suma didi were not there but the field was quite strong. Avneet Kaur, Kuheli Ganguly and Anuja Jung are all international shooters so one can imagine how tough the competition was,8221; added Tejeswani.

And six golds? 8220;That was something I never expected,8221; the shooter added.

Behind Tejeswani, were Avneet and Kuheli who took the silver and bronze, respectively, in 50m sport rifle three-position.
