The final argument to close one case against Mohd Taslimuddin, after the complainant filed a ”compromise” petition, was put off today till August 20 as the magistrate fell ill. But even if that case ends, as expected, in his favour, the Union Minister wouldn’t have seen the back of Araria Civil Court. If he were to attend each hearing in the eight cases in which police have filed chargesheets against him, he would be spending almost his entire time at the court.

And that’s apart from the numerous cases being heard in the court where his name figures one way or the other.

The cases range from alleged assault to defamation to attempt to murder and forgery. Most of the cases were lodged during his tenure as an MLA in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Over the years, a few cases have been dismissed, including one in which police failed to file a chargesheet within the prescribed date.

However, Taslimuddin’s lawyer Dev Narain Sen dismisses the long list: ‘‘My client is made out to be a big criminal but there is no kidnapping, rape or murder case against him.”

Today BJP state president Chandra Shekhar Singh filed an application to stop the latest case against Taslimuddin from collapsing. Complainant Manzar Alam told The Indian Express he had no choice but to file a ‘compromise’ petition after the witnesses turned hostile. Taslimuddin and his supporters were accused of exploding a bomb and firing shots in front of Alam’s house in Araria.

Singh says the case is in public interest, should not be dropped and that the stay on the non-bailable warrant should also be vacated.

There are other cases in various stages of hearing in courts where Taslimuddin is charged. In one case (Araria Police Station No. 45/86), he is accused of cheating and possessing forged documents. In another case (42/86), also lodged at Araria Police Station, Niranjan Mandal has accused Taslimuddin of attempting to murder and assaulting a public servant to stop him from carrying out his official duties. This case is also going on in a sessions court.
