MUMBAI, FEB 26: Controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has postponed her visit to Mumbai on account of ill-health of her father.

In a letter, the author said since the health of her father was deteriorated, she has decided to defer her visit to the city. Presently she has shifted him from Bangladesh to Calcutta seeking better medical facilities. Her itinerary is expected to be announced after eight days.

Nasreen was invited to the city by the Akshar Prakashan Publishing House for the release of a book titled Fitam Phat, a Marathi translation of her novel Soodh. She had written the book six months prior to the release of her controversial novel Lajja which got fundamentalists crying for her blood in Bangladesh. The Marathi translation has been done by Ashok Rahane.

Meanwhile, two Muslim organisations, the Raza Academy and Jamaat-E-Islami Hind (JIH) have announced that they will oppose her entry into the city. “She is baaghi and has no right to come here,” said Sayed Noora, general secretary of the organisation. The academy has also sent a letter to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh urging him to stop her from entering the `sacred soil of Maharashtra’ and warned that the author’s visit create serious law and order problems in the State.

In a separate letter to the Chief Minister, the JIH president Mujtaba Farooque has stated that Taslima should not be allowed in the city as it will spoil the peaceful atmosphere here.

“The Muslim organisations will be forced to plan an agitation if Taslima is allowed to come here and we will be a part of it,” he said.

Earlier, the All India Muslim Mahaz had condemned the Government’s decision to issue visa to Taslima and urged the Prime Minister to cancel it.
