
MUMBAI, Dec 6: Team Farokh Tarapore (crew: Darayus Shroff, Parimal Nagjee and Soneke Stien) have got a head start in the second elimination round, in the first J24 Class National Match Racing Championships off the Mumbai Harbour today.
In the first race against Arjun Pradipak (crew: Anirudh Vijay Kumar, Ashwin Nandan Singh and Aksai Bhaua), Tarapore won easily so also against Gautam Dutta (crew: Naresh Yadav, JD Rami, Varun Idnani).
Sagar Kudale (crew: Nilay Patil, Mandeep and Pradip Patade) caused an upset by defeating team Dutta. They have won against team Pradipak too after the latter gave them a walk-over.
From the first round, team Shibani Framroze got eliminated from group B. Yesterday, team Anshu Puri were knocked out. Six teams Team Tarapore, Team Ashim Mongia, Team Kudale, team Dutta, Team Rohit Tolani, and Team Pradipak have qualified for the second round which is played on a round-robin. The best four teams then move into the semi-finals with the top team getting a chance to pick its semi-final opponent.
Two share lead
Top-seeded Jyotilal and Sagar Masurekar (Fr Agnel’s High School, Vashi,) shared the lead with five points each on completion of the fifth round of the District chess selection tournament at the United Sports Club, Thane, today.
Jyotilal employed the Grunfeld Defence against Dinesh Barodia. He played E-6 on the ninth move and attacked vigourously, to gain four points in the end game. The game lasted for four hours and Barodia had no way of survival and resigned on the 66th move.
Kaustubh Nilegaokar 4.5 is the lone player in the second spot. Following him with four points each are: Dinesh Barodia, Omkar Kulkarni, Vijay Thik, Santosh Raut, Sagar Sadavarte, E S Ahmed, Pankaj Daval and Satish Marathe.
Easy for Bosco’s
Don Bosco (Matunga) trounced St Michael’s 6-0 in the Thums-Up sponsored boys under-14 Inter-school hockey league on their homeground, today.Nigel D’Souza (3), Afrunawaz C, Savio Fernandes and Warren Drego were the goal-getters.
Other results: St Anne’s, Orlem 5 (Reuben Bent 3, Jackson Pinto, Bonaventure Mendes) bt Holy Family, Andheri 0; St Peter’s, Mazagaon 3 (Sunny Arora, Sohail Bombaywalla, Manvendra Deora) drew with St Blaise 3 (Royston Rego 2, Kunal Jathan).
PJ rout Fatima
PJ Club routed Fatima Parish, Sewri, 5-0 in a Division III match of the Rizvi HAM league at the St Andrew’s ground, Bandra, today.
Shanon Pereira, Ian Alves, Dereck Drego, Cristi Williams and Lyden Zuzarte scored a goal each for the winners.
In the other match, Kevni played a goalless with Blasians in a Division IV match.
