Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was in India last week and, while delivering a talk on democracy, narrated an interesting bit about the status of democracy in Pakistan . He said on a visit to that country some time ago, he had tested the patience of his hosts by broaching the subject of democracy. Invoking Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Ibrahim told the Pakistanis that their Quaid-e-Azam was always of the view that the army should remain in the barracks. One Pakistani gentleman then told him that Pakistan’s army followed the advice of Jinnah and remained in its barracks. “Only, the barracks are there on every street,” Ibrahim quoted him as adding.
