The first of the indigenously-assembled T-90 series of main battle tanks will be handed over to the Indian Army for induction on Wednesday. This will enable the Army to replace its ageing fleet of Vijayanta tanks even as it awaits the limited series production of indigenously-developed MBT Arjun.

The tank has ballistic computers for sight and accuracy, and is capable of firing various kinds of ammunition including guided missiles. Significantly it also has a night vision device. It also has a superior armour suited in a nuclear, biological or chemical warfare environment. The first T-90, christened ‘Bhishma’, will be handed over to Army chief Gen N.C. Vij by MoS for Defence Production and Supplies O. Rajagopal at Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi.
