JANUARY 11: The fifth, six-day biennial Trombay Symposium on Radiation and Photochemistry (TSRP-2000) organised by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Department of Atomic Energy, in collaboration with Indian Society for Radiation and Photochemical Sciences will be held from Wednesday at the BARC, Trombay.

Nearly 300 delegates from over 40 countries are expected to participate in the deliberations of TSRP. Photo and radiation chemistry are considered as thrust areas of research activity by all the major funding agencies in India.

Besides the importance of fundamental research in the area of chemical reaction, the knowledge of radiation and photochemistry provides inputs to several application-oriented areas like reactor water chemistry, radiation processing of polymers and composites, radiation sterilisation of pharmaceuticals, food preservation by irradiation, photocuring of polymers, atmospheric photochemistry, photo and radiation processing of industrial waste and many others.

BARC has been actively engaged in various such activities and has advanced laser, accelator and other facilities to carry out in-depth investigations in these areas. The present symposium will focus on the fundamental aspects of research in these areas. The presence of several internationally renowned scientists in the symposium is expected to provide a boost to the research and development activities in the twin thrust areas of research activity.
