MARCH, MUMBAI 27: Sushil Kumar’s fine volley for Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) was enough to floor host Karnatak Sporting Association (KSA) in the Group A of the inaugural Karnatak Veterans Football tournament, sponsored by MIS Raja Radio Palace, today at the Karnatak Sporting Association ground, Cross Maidan. Now, RCF have four points from two matches while KSA have a single point from same number of matches.

In another keenly contested Group B match, Air-India (A-I) drew with city arch rivals Mahindras 1-1. A-I, also have four from two while Mahindras have managed two from identical number of matches.

Playing the first-half again with a player short, RCF pressed hard from the beginning. Striker Meen Gurung took a rasping shot in the 15th minute which got deflected off a KSA defender and landed in front of Kumar. The former Mafatlal player, in a jiffy, positioned himself to place his volley to the far corner of KSA citadel. KSA ‘keeper Shekhar Bangera was caught on the flat-footed and couldmanage to see it landing in the net. And when KSA players got their acts together, it was luck which deprived them a goal. RCF ‘keeper Bhaskar Maity — 1978 Asian Games player, thwarted KSA’ Pushpkant Kerkera’s free-kick in the 24th minute. But, the best scoring chance fell to striker Prakash Shetty in the 26th minute when medio Jaya Salian floated in from right. The former positioned himself on the goal-mouth but his header flew over the bar. Jaya Salian, the former Orkay Mills player, also unleashed a pile-driver from 30 yards in the 35th minute which swirled away. In the second match of the day, Mithun Sarkar put Air-India ahead in the 23rd minute. Medio Sanjeev Pilat took a long ranger which got deflected of a Mahindras defender. Close-lurking Sarkar dribbled past a Mahindras defender and placed to the right of Andrew Pinto — Mahindras ‘keeper.

Victor D’Silva restored parity for Mahindras four minutes later.
