The Gadchiroli police today sent a message to Naxalites, organising the wedding of a woman Naxalite cadre who had surrendered and footing the bill for more than 300 baraatis who turned up.
Surrounded by her parents and relatives, Sunita (23) of Lingampalli village in Aheri tehsil married Parvesh Madavi (24), a tribal from from Mallampalli village. The wedding was held at Alapalli town.
‘‘Sunita had joined the Aheri Dalam in 2001 and had subsequently worked for many other Dalams. She had surrendered in October last year under the state government’s surrender policy, complaining of sexual harassment by Dalam members,’’ ASP CH Stalin told The Indian Express.
While undergoing treatment at Bijapur in Chhattisgarh, Sunita had expressed the desire to surrender. Accordingly, the police there handed her over to their Gadchiroli counterparts. ‘‘We have information that a lot of Dalam members want to surrender but fear that we might implicate them in some cases. We wanted to send them an assurance that we won’t do anything of the kind and that we will help them join the mainstream. So, we arranged this marriage,’’ said Stalin.
