
Cong attempt to burn CM8217;s effigy foiled
Surat: The Surat unit of Congress attempted to burn the chief minister and civil supplies minister in effigy to protest against the rising prices of essential commodities in the state. However, the Chowkbazaar Police intervened and foiled the programme. The Congress leaders accused the BJP government of being hand in glove with the oil lobby. The corrupt practices adopted by the BJP leaders were adding to the already exorbitant prices, they alleged.

S K Bhattacharya, principal of the Chandrabala Modi Academy, Ankleshwar, was awarded the International Business Council8217;s Excellence Award by the Tourism and Welfare Minister. Bhattacharya is also a recipient of the Order of Merit and the title of Samaj Shree8217; in 1994-95 instituted by Mumbai-based Indian Council of Management Executives for his contribution in the field of education.
The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Gujarat Sales Tax Bar Association jointly organised a public meeting at the Surat People8217;s Bank Hall in Samruddhi on The Impact of the Sales Tax Amendment Act 1998 on Local Entrepreneurs and Industrialists.8217; Former president of the Sales Tax Tribunal, Ahmedabad, D M Vasavda, who was the chief guest on the occasion, spoke on the impacts of the legislation on industrialists, changes in the act and their impact on entrepreneurs. SGCCI president, Rajendra Chokhawala also spoke on the occasion.
WWF appeal
The city branch of the World Wide Fund For Nature has appealed people not to throw thermacol, plastic and other non biodegradable substances into the Tapi during immersion. In an appeal on Tuesday, Rohit Bhujbal, education advisor of branch, said throwing plastic would disturb the eco-balance of the water life. He said the organisation had taken up a drive Save Our River8217; and appealed people to contribute towards its success. The organisation also appealed to the SMC and SUDA to take up the cause.
Ban on entry
Residents of Dindoli village of Choryasi taluka, on the outskirts of the city, have been asked not to venture into the Dindoli lake or take their cattle to the lake as the zilla panchayat had taken up deepening of the lake. A release issued here stated that the lake was not uniformly deep, and could could pose a threat to life of people and cattle. All those entering the lake will do so at their own risk, the statement added.
Felicitation
A number of primary teachers of the district will be felicitated at a function to be held here on September 5, on the occasion of Teachers Day. Similar felicitation programmes have also been organised by the SMC and other educational institutions on the day.
Blood donation
Vadodara: A blood donation camp will be jointly organised by the Friends Society, Fatehgunj, and Lions Club West Wing on September 3 at the Science Block, Faculty of Technology and Engineering, Kalabhavan, between 9.30 am to 1.30 pm. A thalessaemia minor testing will also be conducted at the camp.
