
District panel for NRIs
The district administration has set up the Gujarat State Non-Resident Gujarati Pratishthan to look into the problems faced by NRIs from the State. To be headed by the district collector, it will meet once in two months to review problems faced by non-resident Gujaratis. The other members of the committee are the district development officer, the district superintendent of police and the deputy collector. Similar committees will also be set up in Anand, Kheda, Vadodara, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Mehsana, Kutch and Rajkot districts.
Pool contract
The Surat Municipal Corporation standing committee on Thursday allotted a Rs 1.47 crore contract to develop a 25215;50 m swimming in Adajan to one Mayur Construction Company. The swimming pool would be ready within 18 months, standing committee chairman Natu Soma Patel said.
Deadline extended
The Surat Municipal authorities have decided to extend the time limit for the manpower review committee to submit its report to December 15. The panel, set up by the Surat Municipal Corporation to recommend a revamp of work force, is headed by a professor of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. It will also be paid Rs 25,000 more than the sum mentioned in the contract.
Blacklist demand
Congress councillor Bhupendra Solanki has demanded that the contractor supposed to maintain streetlights in the central zone be blacklisted for poor work. In a letter to Municipal Commissioner G P Mohapatra, Solanki also demanded the termination of his contract and a vigilance enquiry against him, alleging that though he was paid for whole month, 15 per cent of the streetlights were actually out of order.
Artisans8217; scheme
The Handicraft Development Department of the textile ministry has put into effect a scheme under which outstanding artisans will be provided a monthly stipend of Rs 500. Award-winning candidates below the age of 60, with an annual income less than Rs 6000, may collect their application forms from the district industry centre, Bahumali. Filled-in forms should be sent to the Development Commissioner Handicrafts, R K Puram, New Delhi, before September 20.
