MLA alleges corruption
City MLA Dheeru Gajera, in a letter to Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, has alleged widespread corruption in appointment of non-Gujaratis in major industries in and around Surat. He has alleged in the letter that hundreds of non-Gujaratis presented signed affidavits that they were residing in the State for more than 15 years in order to bypass a clause that Gujaratis should be given preference in technical and non-technical jobs. 8220;More than 90 per cent employees in industries in Hazira are non-Gujaratis,8221; he claimed, demanding an inquiry into what he called false affidavits.

Notification
The State Election Commission has issued a notification on limit of election expenditure for civic by-elections to ward No 31 in Surat and ward No 5 of Songadh Nagar Panchayat to be held on April 18. The candidates have been directed to maintain vouchers, receipts and other documents, while voucher register will have to be returned to officials on daily. Election Officer Sangeeta Singh said all candidates and their agents will have to be present in the office of the account officer to submit vouchers on Thursday and Friday between 4 and 6 pm to show the expenditure.

New school
An English-medium school founded by GIPCL was inaugurated at Naninaroli village of Mangrol taluka on Thursday. The school will accommodate children of employees of GIPCL-run Surat Ignite power project as well as students of neighbouring villages. The school is affiliated to Bharatiya Vidha Bhavan, Mumbai, a release issued here on Thursday said.

Hearing held
Vadodara: Hearing in the Asiatic lion cub case was held in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on Thursday. The forest department had moved court seeking the remand of the accused. The judgement will be delivered on Saturday.
