NEW DELHI, May 12: The sudden thunder storm, followed by a heavy rain, spoilt Indian Airlines’ party who, after scoring 251 for nine in their semi-final match against Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in the GG Dutt cricket tournament, found themselves out as the spin of coin took ONGC to the final at the Hindu College ground.

After the rain left the outfield soggy during the ONGC innings (they were 17 for no loss after three overs), the match had to be abandoned and, as per rulers of the tournament, the game had to be decided by the spin of coin.

ONGC skipper Rizwan Shamshad won the toss and inserted Indian Airlines. But IAC piled up an impressive 251 for the loss of nine with a fine century coming from the blade of Sukhwinder Singh. ONGC thus entred the final after 13 years.

Sukhwinder’s 116 contained one six and 17 hits to the bound as he faced 94 balls. The other best score came from Vijay Dhaiya, who made 33.

Airlines did not have a blistering start as they were struggling at 51 for four with the first four batsmen back in the pavilion. But once Sukhwinder entered the arena, things changed for the better as Airlines from thereon went about compiling runs more methodically to post a challing total. Subhash Chaduhary used the long handle effectively to post 30 and 24 extras also helped their total swell.

Delhi Ranji medium-pacer Amit Bhandari was the most successful bowler with four scalps while Dinesh Tomar catpured two for 51.

Brief scores: Airlines 251 for 9 (Vijay Dhaiya 33, Sukhwinder Singh 116, Sudhir Giri 24, S. Chaudhary 30, Amit Bhandari 4 for 54, Dinesh Tomar 2 for 51). ONGC 17 for no loss. Match abandoned.
