A day after an FIR was filed against Subhas Chakrabarty for his disparaging comments on Election Commission officials, the state Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs struck a defiant and unrepentant stand.

Addressing campaign meetings in Salt Lake today, Chakrabarty stood by what he had said earlier. 8216;8216;If we can criticise God, then we can also criticise the EC. There is no clause in the Constitution which says one cannot criticise the EC. Its work pertains to conducting the elections in a free and fair manner, and it should function on those lines,8217;8217; he said.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had opined that Chakrabarty was indeed wrong in making such comments against the EC.

But Chakrabarty obviously was in no mood to agree. 8216;8216;Our party office in Keshpur is ransacked at the instructions of the EC observers. The wall writings come to an end according to their diktat. Should we keep quiet even after that?8217;8217; he asked.

The CPIM leader addressed several meetings in Salt Lake today. Most of his speeches targeted the EC.
