IMPHAL, MARCH 17: A students8217; body in Manipur has demanded an immediate end to counter- insurgency operations by the army at Loktake lake area in the Bishenpur district in view of the Class XII examinations from today.

Manipur Students8217; Federation MSF said in a statement yesterday that the security combing operations at Loktak lake, about 45 km south-east of here, since March 10, had hampered life in the area.

The statement also alleged human rights violations during the security operations at Loktak lake.

Meanwhile, senior Congress and former Arts and Culture minister, Tongbram Mangibabu Singh who represents the area, said local residents were not allowed to move out of their houses and added that he too was not allowed to visit the area by security forces.

He said local residents who earned their livelihood by fishing at Loktak lake were also not allowed to earn their livelihood and demanded immediate calling off of security operations.

He said he had apprised Deputy Chief Minister, LChandramani Singh, of the situation prevailing in the area and drew the attention of the State Government to help the local residents. Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh is now in Delhi, he said.
