LUCKNOW, JANUARY 25: Special Protection Group SPG commandos guarding former prime minister Chandrashekhar on Tuesday opened fire on a group of students killing one of them. The students apparently tried to force their way into the compartment of the train in which the former PM was travelling at Sadat station in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Trouble erupted when the students pulled the chain of New Delhi-Muzaffarpur Lichvi Express and tried to enter the compartment in which Chandrashekhar was travelling, UP home secretary A K Srivastava told reporters here.

He said the commandos first tried to prevent the students from entering the coach and when the situation went out of control opened fire killing Shrikant Vajpayee and injuring Ravindra Kumar.

Chandrashekhar was immediately rescued and taken into a car which left for Ballia, his parliamentary constituency.

Infuriated at the firing, the students set ablaze the engine of the train and the fire later spread to seven compartments badly damaging them.

Two compartments of another passenger train also caught fire before fire tenders brought the flames under control, the home secretary said.

Tension gripped Sadat town as students of a local college protesting the firing by SPG commandos pelted stones on the two trains.
