The Indian leg of the Rolling Stones’ 40 Licks World Tour concert finally kicked off on Friday night at 7.45 pm at the Palace Grounds here.
The specially constructed stage of gladiatorial proportions suitably awed the crowd which came under a dazzle of synchro lights even as the Rolling Stones appeared before the eager fans.
In a burst of mega-watt sound, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and the rest took the stage with their now famous panache. The ‘‘Glimmer Twins’’, Jagger and Richards showed that even after all these years, their trademark act had still not lost its charm.
The Stones’ started the concert with their 1981 number Brown Sugar and followed it up with Only Rock ’n Roll (But I like It), Start Me Up and Don’t Stop (1981) all these being part of their 40 Licks collection.
Their vocals were backed up by a terrific sound system with a reported output of 240,000 watts.
As promised, the Stones’ stage boasted stunning dimensions of 150 feet wide, 60 ft deep and 40 ft high. The lighting consisted of 800 moving lights and sky tracers.
The giant digital plasma screen at the venue transmitted their image to the large crowd with some spell-binding special effects thrown in.
There was a blast of confetti, in saffron, green and white, from giant confetti cannons that showered the already charged crowds.
