
CHANDIGARH, MARCH 9: A protest rally was organised by the Telecom Department Chandigarh Daily Wager Workers Union today to protest the sacking of 450 odd workers by the department on February 28. The protesters condemned the Administration for taking away the employment so many workers in a sudden move.
The sacked employees set out on their bicycles in the form of a procession from Sector 34 and reached Sector 17 Plaza where they held a demonstration and raised slogans against the Administration.
The sacked employees, who were serving in various capacities viz assistant, linemen, peon, sweeper and clerk demanded ending of the contract system of hiring workers. They allege that the system did not ensure job security and timely pay.
Addressing the gathering, Tanved Ali Khan, general secretary of the union, said that a delegation of the union had met the chief general manager, Telecom, Punjab Circle, who, he claimed, had expressed sympathy with their cause.
The protesters said that if their demands were not met, they would go to Delhi to press for their demands in front of the Minister of Telecommunication.
