RAJKOT, JUNE 18: A statewide alert was sounded in Gujarat on Thursday against the possibility of increased terrorist activity by Pakistan-sponsored outfits to create panic and spread terror 8220;by targeting specific areas of public life8221;.

In a communication to all police commissioners, district police chiefs and the border police, Director General of Police Intelligence R N Bhattacharya said terrorist outfits were likely to increase their activities in the State as well as in Rajasthan and could target VIPs, vital installations and communication networks.

According to the communication, intelligence reports suggest that a sizable quantity of explosives like grenades and RDX have already been smuggled into Gujarat and Rajasthan through various routes using trucks and cars. The intelligence agencies have also noticed an increase in the sale of timers and remote controls of late.

The communication warned that the outfits may plant improvised explosive devices in brief cases, transistors, tiffin boxes etc placed at crowded places. Therefore, 8220;police officers of all ranks must be sensitised to this threat8221;. The outfits could be using covert methods including placement of trained agents, provocateurs, clandestine networks and fundamentalists to perpetuate violence and cause panic and insecurity.

Police have been asked to keep a close watch on known anti-national elements, criminals, border crossers, and underworld men with Pakistan connections. The communication also stressed the need to increase vigilance in the border areas.

It also warned that several Jammu and Kashmir militants had escaped to other parts of the country and were moving about in the guise of carpet dealers.
