NEW DELHI: The Gandhi Peace Foundation and several other organisations have appealed to the Bodo militants to release, Gandhian social worker Dwarika Barua who was abducted by National Demoracti Front of Bodoland on November 26. “Dwarika Barua has dedicated his life to the cause of the Bodo community for the last fifty years. His organisation, Gram Lok Seva Sangh at Dhamdhama in Nalbari district has been actively involved in the Khadi movement and has assisted the local Bodo community in improving the status of hygiene and sanitation, health and basic education,” the organisations said in their appeal.

NC leader shot dead

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s ruling National Conference leader Ghulam Rasool Mir was shot dead by militants in his house in the early hours on Thursday. Two masked militants knocked at the door of the NC leader’s house at Dabyar-Habbakadal around 0500 hours and sprayed bullets from very close range on Mir. His killing comes at a time when the NC is to observe the 92nd birth anniversary of its founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on Friday.

Cattle-thieves lynched in Bengal

CALCUTTA: Irate villagers lynched four persons, alleged to be cattle-lifters, near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Nadia district yesterday, police said on Thursday. Villagers of Swarnakhali, Gandharvapur and Bagna gave them a hot chase and caught them with cattle, suspected to have been lifted from the border area, and beat them up. While three persons died on the spot, another succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Police made 33 arrests.
