Two Babbar Khalsa `human bombs’ surrender
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police have unearthed a "highly-sinister" plan to target top political leaders and carry out acts of sabotage with the surrender of two Pakistan-trained members of Babbar Khalsa outfit who had been indoctrined to serve as human bombs.
The surrender on Saturday is a result of a series of sensitive operations launched by police in the wake of inputs suggesting revival of Babbar Khalsa and other terrorist organisations, Punjab Police chief Sarbjit Singh said here. Police recovered ten kgs of RDX and two pistols from the "human bombs" identified as Manjit Singh alias Kabal Singh of Tarn Taran district and Amrik Singh alias Saini of Batala district, he said.
Cell to monitor educational ads
NEW DELHI: Union Education Secretary M K Kaw today announced that a malpractice cell had been set-up by the department to curb misleading and illegal advertisements by private educational institutions. Inaugurating a C-band satellite uplinking theearth station here, Kaw said that it was brought to the notice of the authorities that some educational institutions in the non-governmental sector had released misleading and illegal advertisements to fleece unsuspecting students.
10 killed, 11 hurt in TN mishap
CHENNAI: Ten persons were killed on the spot and 11 others seriously injured when the lorry in which they were travelling capsized at Kalleri village in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district on Saturday night. The dead included four women and a male child. The lorry, laden with iron rods and pipes, was proceeding to Bangalore from Villupuram when the mishap took place.
13 held for beating up Dalit women
HYDERABAD: Police have arrested 13 persons belonging to upper caste, including two women, for allegedly beating up four Dalit women following a dispute over using water from a borewell at Malasamudram village here recently. Anantapur Deputy IGP Tejdeep said on Sunday that some people belonging to upper caste had prevented aneight-year-old Dalit girl from taking water from the borewell and when elders of her family intervened, they were beaten up.
