Jordanian sentenced to 10 years8217; RI for cheating

NEW DELHI: A special court has sentenced a Jordanian to 10 year8217;s rigorous imprisonment for cheating various banks in India, the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI said here on Sunday.

The designated court also slapped a fine of Rs 14,000 on the accused Fatouh Ahmed Mahmoud Abu Satta alias Imry Razi Ozban on Saturday, the CBI said. The accused entered into a criminal conspiracy with some unknown persons with an aim to encash forged and counterfeit demand drafts purported to have been issued by M/s Dubai Islamic Bank, Dubai, it said in a release here.

Diocese to observe Arul Doss Day8217;

BALASORE: The Catholic Diocese here will undertake a peace march on September 17 in Mayurbhanj district in memory of Roman Catholic priest Arul Doss who was killed on September 2.

A holy mass would be observed at the spot where he was murdered, he said, adding September 17 would be observed as Father Arul Doss Day. The peace march will start from Saratvillage where Doss worked for about five years and reach Jamubani village where he was killed, Diocese secretary Father Isaac Puthenangady said.

Capital to host symposium on torture

NEW DELHI: An international symposium will highlight the plight of victims of torture, especially those who suffer trauma at the hands of the State, from September 22 to 25. Justice V S Malimath, a human rights crusader and chairman of the organising committee of the symposium, said the Eighth International Symposium on Torture 8212; A Challenge to Health, Legal and other Professions8217;, aims to sensitise the State, professionals and community to the problems of torture victims and evolve measures for their rehabilitation.
