VADODARA, April 21: The Adhikar Prapti Kendra APK, a local human rights organisation, has urged Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel to set up a state human rights commission to ensure human rights of weaker sections of the society.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday which was attended among others by representatives of other non-governmental organisations including the People8217;s Union for Civil Liberties, Parivartan Sanstha and World Vision APK district co-ordinator Shital Shukla said a state-level human rights commission was the need of the hour so that people did not have to go the National Human Rights Commission NHRC directly.

She said approaching the Delhi-headquartered NHRC was not only expensive but also delayed investigation and delivery of justice.

She said the demolition of slum houses in Mahadevnagar and Dahri Talaodi was a blatant violation of human rights. Stating hat to own a house was the fundamental right of every citizen in a democracy, she said demolishing houses amounted to stripping poor citizens of their right to have a house.
