
CHANDIGARH, Oct 24: The increasing poverty in the country and increasing violence against women and girl children in families were the issues of deliberation on the occasion of state-level convention of the Punjab Istri Sabha held here in the Punjab Red Cross Bhawan, Sector 16. The convention was organised to work out the action plan for the Global Women8217;s March 20008242; which will start on March 8, 2000, International Women8217;s Day.
The assembly which was inaugurated by Promila Loomba, vice-president, National Federation of Indian Women, unanimously adopted four resolutions: Against rising poverty, increasing violence particularly against children, against constantly rising prices of essential commodities and also in favour of a special ban on disarmament.
Speaking on the occasion, president of the Sabha, Oshima Raikey, referred to violence and deprivation as the two main issues in need of immediate redressal. She said emphasis must be laid on education of women, their employment, equality of pay, property rights, social protection, health care and right to vocational training.
Promila Loomba also addressed the guests and delegates on the occasion.
