JANUARY 11: The Sessions Court today directed the state government to produce Tulasa Bir Dhoj Thapa, who was kidnapped form her village in Nepal and sold into the flesh trade in Mumbai in 1982, before the court within 15 days.

Additional Sessions judge K U Chandiwal adjourned the hearing till January 27, 2000. The case came up for hearing 18 years after the First Information Report was registered.

Tulasa, then aged 13, was rescued by the People8217;s Health Organisation PHO after 10 months of sexual abuse. Secretary of PHO I S Gilada, who was then attached to the JJ Hospital as Resident Medical Officer informed the court that the girl was suffering from three types of sexually transmitted diseases STD and tuberculosis, as a result of which she became spastic and is now confined to a wheelchair. She was sent back to Nepal after 18 months of treatment, Gilada told the court.

When the matter came up for hearing on Monday, the prosecution informed the court that it was not possible to bring the girl from Nepal and that she was untraceable. Dr Gilada, however, told the court that he had the detailed whereabouts of the girl and expressed his desire to bring her. The court then adjourned the matter to Tuesday.

On Tuesday, special public prosecutor Dinanath K Joshi told the court that it was a very tedious procedure to bring the girl from Nepal and requested the court to give the police a month to bring the girl. However, the court declined to give the government more time and directed that the girl be brought within 15 days.

Of the 32 persons, including three brothel owners, who have been named by Tulasa in her statement, seven have been chargesheeted. The abductors of Tulasa have already been given 20 years of imprisonment by a Nepal court where they were tried.

Tulasa was abducted from Nepal by a family and then brought to the city via Birganj. She was then sold to a brothel and was forced to have sex with three different customers daily.
