MUMBAI, July 29: Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde today reassured the agitated members of the Maharashtra Assembly that the report of the Srikrishna Commission, which probed into the December 92 and January 93 communal riots will be tabled during the on-going monsoon session of the State Legislature.
"The entire 700-page report of the Srikrishna Commission will be tabled in both the Houses of State Legislature before August 7," Munde told the Assembly.
Responding to the doubts raised by Leader of Opposition Madhukar Pichad and Communist member Narsaiyya Adam, Munde said as per the agreement before the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), his government will table the report. However, Munde declined to comment on the Opposition demand for a three-day debate on the much awaited report.
Soon after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Leeladhar Dake moved a resolution to approve the BAC’s proposal for extension of session up to August 7, Adam, Pichad and Wamanrao Chatap sought an explanation from the ministeras to why the proposal of tabling the report has not been mentioned in his agenda.
After Munde declined to give a specific assurance on the debate, a section of the Opposition members led by Adam staged a brief walkout.
Meanwhile, Intelligence Bureau director Shyamal Dutt today separately called on Governor P C Alexander, Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, Gopinath Munde, Chief Secretary P Subramanian, Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar and Commissioner of Police R C Mendonca.
During his meeting with police officials, Shyamal Dutt is understood to have reviewed the law and order situation in the metropolis.
Though Dutt’s visit has been described as routine one, according to a senior official, he was here at the instance of the Centre, which is assessing the situation and preparedness of the State Government in the event the Srikrishna report is tabled in the Legislature.
The official said in fact the report was to tabled today and accordingly it was communicated to the law enforcing agencies toremain vigilant. However, since the Parliament session has been extended, now there is uncertainty over the tabling of the report, the official added.
