Pacer S Sreesanth was today ruled out of the second cricket one-dayer against South Africa as India continued to be dogged by injuries and illness on their tour of the United Kingdom.
While the Kerala bowler will sit out for the second successive game, there is also a question mark on the availability of Gautam Gambhir, who is down with fever.
8220;Sreesanth has not recovered as yet and will miss tomorrow8217;s game,8221; Indian captain Rahul Dravid said. The Indians, however, have something to cheer about with wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni 8212; who has sat out all the matches so far 8212; expected to take the field in the crucial match tomorrow.
The team management will take a final decision on Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar, another victim of the flu bug, on the morning of the match which India have to win to keep themselves afloat in the three-match series.
Dravid admitted that Agarkar and Dhoni could be a bit rusty as they had been out of action for a week. 8220;It would be better if they had some practice but it has been raining heavily here,8221; he said.
Dravid is looking for an improvement in both departments of the game over what was on display on Sunday.
8220;We could have batted better at the death and could have bowled better in the middle overs,8221; he said. The Karnataka batsman, however, said that only a captain8217;s knock from Jacques Kallis denied the Indians a victory.
8220;Against top teams and top players we have to get the key players out. We just couldn8217;t get that one wicket we needed Kallis.8221; Dravid said the lack of a third seamer also proved a disadvantage.
8220;We probably missed an extra seamer in the last game. I thought we gave away too many runs in the first 20 overs during the powerplays. 8220;We didn8217;t have a third seamer and had to bowl Sourav Ganguly. Hopefully, we8217;ll have the right balance for tomorrow8217;s game,8221; the skipper said.
Meanwhile, Ranadeb Bose and Ishant Sharma, called up as cover for the unfit pacer, have reached Belfast. But the Delhi bowler has lost his kit. Efforts are on to find a pair of bowling shoes for him but it is not easy to find one of right size.
South Africa are likely to include fast bowler Dale Steyn and off-spinner Thandi Tshabalala to add variety in their attack tomorrow.
Though both Steyn and Tshabalala are down with mild flu, they are expected to be fit for the game. Vernon Philander and another pacer are likely to be left out of the playing XI.
8220;In the first game, our attack was fairly predictable in the middle overs,8221; said South African coach Micky Arthur. 8220;We need to ask some serious questions in the middle overs so we thought of making some changes and adding a bit more variety to our attack.8221;
