Retired police officer R B Sreekumar, who had alleged that politicians who were part of the state Government had prevented the police from carrying out their duties during the 2002 riots, was given a post-superannuation promotion to the rank of Director General of Police on Friday. The Gujarat Home Department8217;s order will be implemented with effect from February 2005, when Sreekumar was denied a promotion and was superseded.

The retired cop terms the order a 8220;victory8221; for him, though the only difference the order is going to make now is that he will be eligible for full pension of a DGP and the arrears.

The officer had shot to fame in August 2004 following his deposition against the Government before the Nanavati-Shah Commission looking into the 2002 Godhra carnage and the riots that followed. Sreekumar was denied a promotion on the grounds that a 1987 case against him, related to the period he was the SP of Kutch, was pending before a court. Subsequently, he was also served a nine-point chargesheet.

He took his case to the Central Administrative Tribunal which gave its ruling in September 2006 in his favour. The state Government then appealed to the vice-chairman of CAT, and subsequently to the Gujarat High Court, but the retired officer came out victorious on both the occasions.

8220;The charges were all cooked up and the judiciary saw through it,8221; said a relieved Sreekumar. Calling it a vindication of his fight, Sreekumar said the order he received on Thursday afternoon showed the strength of the country8217;s judicial system. 8220;It is a big victory against a dispensation that is vindictive and mala fide,8221; he added.
