CHANDIGARH, March 30: Some sports centres in the city under the ageis of the Chandigarh Sports Department are being given facelift. Plans are also afoot to have latest infrastructure at some centres.

The renovation work of the two volleyball courts at the Sector 7 Sports Complex is going at war-footing and the construction work is expected to complete soon and the courts would be available for play in the second week of April.

According to sources in the Chandigarh Sports Department, more than Rs 5 lakh has been sanctioned for the courts, including relaying of old cinder and wire-mesh all around the courts.

“The work is almost complete and the courts would be ready for use within a fortnight, ” said the contractor.

Earlier, the two volleyball courts at the Sector 46 Sports Complex were also renovated. Apart from relaying the cinder, the wire mesh around the courts was also replaced.

Hockey ground (grass) at the Sector 42 Sports Complex is also being renovated. A section of the ground was eroded during the monsoon by the strong current of the choe, which flows close to the ground. However, with the contruction of a stone wall adjoining the ground and choe, will prevent further erosion.

The new synthetic tennis courts at the Lake Club are also on the cards.Basketball courts at the Sector 46 Sports Complex will also be renovated soon. However, there is good news for the swimming buffs. The sports department is planning to have all weather pool. According to an official of the department budget for the pool has been approved.

Latest facilities for judokas, weightlifters and wrestlers would also be set up soon at the Sector 42 Sports Complex. “The grant of the Indoor Hall multipurpose hall has been sanctioned” said an official of the sports department.
