KAUR SINGH
He was like any youth one meets in a Punjab village. Tall, rough-hewn, well-built, his traits best suited a job with the army. And Kaur Singh, with just primary education, did just that in 1971. Taking to boxing soon after, he became an instant hit with his sparring partners in the army and outside. He then established himself as India8217;s first 8212; and till date only 8212; heavyweight boxing star. Between 1979 and 1982 Kaur reigned supreme, the king of rings. However, his best moments came in 1982. He8217;d already won a gold at the King8217;s Cup in Bangkok but no one gave him a ghost of a chance in the Asian Games that followed in New Delhi. But Kaur Singh proved all his critics wrong. Reeling off combination punches, he won a unanimous verdict from the judges for an Asiad gold 8212; the best ever until Dingko Singh did it in Bangkok in 1998.
