For Haryana strongman Om Prakash Chautala, no time could have been more perfect than this to stage a comeback. The Congress is an openly divided house and former CM Bhajan Lal and his son Kuldeep Bishnoi are busy snipping at the roots of the party. In Punjab, friend Parkash Singh Badal is back in power.
After being confined to a cocoon for two years after the Indian National Lok Dal INLD was given a severe drubbing in the Assembly election, Chautala was abroad for treatment or did not make any public appearance. But he had been waiting for the right opportunity all along.
The time seems to have come, though his first day in the House was a nasty experience. The next day, the Congress expected him to keep away from the House, unaware that the former CM would turn the tables on them. Just 24 hours after being called Ravana, Idi Amin and Saddam Hussein, Chautala returned to his element, forcing Speaker Raghuvir Singh Kadian to adjourn the House twice.
8220;Haryana will be worse than Punjab. Here the Congress will not have a choice, as by then Bhajan Lal would have formed his own party,8221; said a Chautala confidant. Chautala had his own take: 8220;Sarkaron ka kya pata chalta hai kab gir jayein.8221;
Chautala has only gained strength from the Congress infighting. Despite being lauded by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Bishnoi8217;s campaign to cut Hooda8217;s roots is harming the CM and his party. Though within the party Bishnoi seems to has little support, those who know Bhajan Lal are aware of how he is capable of tilting the balance in his favour.
