CHANDIGARH, Sept 25: The two-day North Zone Convention of SPIC MACAY was inaugurated here today with about 80 delegates from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu attending the proceedings.

As a part of the convention, a conceptual session detailng the essence and meaning of SPIC MACAY, the acronym standing for the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst the Youth, was held. The session was chaired by SPIC MACAY8217;s founder, Dr Kiran Seth.

Various matters regarding the performance of different state chapters of the organisation as well as reaching out to a larger number of people were discussed. It was also stressed that movements like SPIC MACAY have a definite role to play in preserving traditions.

Formed in 1977, as a non-profit, non-political voluntary organisation, it conducts culture-related programmes through a nationwide network of schools, colleges and educational institutions. Its activities include lectures and concerts on classical music and dance as well as informal interactions between artists and students.

The highlight of the day was a concert by Sharif Iddu, a Sufi singer.
