.

8226; Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee is proving his mettle with his tough stand on tainted MPs. His task is far from over and it would be appropriate to see Sonia Gandhi and Lal Krishna Advani rise over party lines and strengthen the Speaker8217;s voice in this long overdue crusade. The tainted MPs can expect no mercy from the judiciary, which in its own way has been trying to clear the political rot that has clogged the political spectrum. In fact the 10 Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha MPs should not have been allowed to get away with a mere expulsion but face criminal charges, according to the law. These seven MPs include South Goa MP Churchill Alemao, whose versions of facts keep changing by the day. He is pleading innocence by claiming he was educated in Portuguese and that his English was very poor. This could perhaps be the reason for him having rejected the 8220;cash for questions8221; package, and chosen to conveniently negotiate a slice of a project under MPLADS.

Dream budget?

8226; For the salaried person and the common man, FM8217;s dream budget means they have now to view their ambitions and desires only in their dreams because, in reality, the major chunk of their income will be sucked away to pay increased direct and indirect taxes. The majority of the Indians will now be dreamers, literally building castles only in the air! FM stands for 8220;finished massacre8221;!

What a list!

8226; With reference to your front page report on demolitions IE, January 11, just
consider our elected representatives. What a grotesque profile they present of themselves! The majority of them are either law-makers first and law-breakers subsequently, or vice versa. You name a crime and they adorn the list of those who have committed it.

Speaking out

8226; It8217;s a very good thing that Infosys and Biocon chiefs are speaking out. The public should some out openly against the meaningless acts of our politicians. And who can better lead this debate than our respected business leaders? Has anyone even considered the impact of calling Bangalore, Bengaluru, now that it has gained international significance?

Important ordinance

8226; The editorial, 8216;Third decree treatment8217; IE, January 7, asks 8220;What was the
urgency?8221; The question is both rhetorical as well as naive. It is obvious that to get the government8217;s policy operative before the start of admissions for the next academic year, the government had to take recourse to the 8220;entirely legal and constitutionally permitted8221; route of an ordinance. Though you have tried to bracket this ordinance along with some others like the Maharashtra government8217;s ordinance on bar girls, the importance of the Centre8217;s ordinance cannot be missed by all fair-minded citizens.

Just a stunt

8226; This phone tapping issue is more of a political stunt than anything else. Although it is illegal to tape phone calls 8212; and an inquiry must be made into it 8212; this issue is bound to die a natural death with time.
