Speaker takes on Governor

Days after West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty criticised Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi

.

Days after West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty criticised Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, for making the statement questioning the police firing at Nandigram it was Assembly Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim8217;s turn today to put both on the dock, much for the same reason.

8220;The Governor is the Constitutional authority and he has no business making such a statement. Further, even if he had made such a statement, the court should not have taken cognisance of it. How far the court can use press statement of the Governor as a basis for PIL needs to be examined,8221; Halim said after the day8217;s proceedings.

During the session today, Halim however did not allow the legislators to raise the issue, saying all statements relating to the Nandigram incident raised by the members be expunged from the assembly records.

The Speaker issued the order after responding to a point of order brought to the House by Congress leader Manash Bhunia. Bhunia asked for the CM8217;s response on how the government could order a CID inquiry when the CBI is already at work.

8220;The Nandigram issue has become complex,8221; Halim said, adding that he, as Speaker, has the duty to protect the court. 8220;When the court has issued a writ, we have to protect the writ,8221; he said.
