MUMBAI, April 8: The dean of the Sir JJ Group of Hospitals in Byculla, Dayanand Dongoankar, has rejected the demand of Samajwadi Party (SP) activists to be present during the course of inquiry into the controversial abortion case here.

The dean has instituted an inquiry committee to look into the case of Marium Mansoori, who alleged that the hospital had aborted her “seven-month-old baby.” The hospital revealed the “19-week-old” foetus weighing 120 grams had died an intra-uterine death in Marium’s womb.

The committee, headed by Dr Rekha Davar, head of department of gynaecology and obstetrics, Grant Medical College, superintendent Dr S B Modi and matron Kusum Adhav, has been at work questioning staffers who were present on the night of March 24, 1998. “Davar is not connected with patient care, which comes under the respective unit head. In this case, full-time associate professor Dr Jasmine Lopez and honorary associate Dr Chittaranjan Purandare are under inquiry,” sources confirmed. Dongaonkar said,“We have sent two letters to Marium’s family calling her for an examination to ascertain her version. But SP activists are insisting they sit in at the inquiry. We don’t mind if Marium’s mother or husband accompany her, but outsiders will not be permitted.”
