Chandigarh, Sept 2: UT Inspector General of Police S.K. Singh has asked Superintendent of Police traffic and security Balbir Singh to conduct fresh investigations into the mysterious death of Sonia in June 1997. Balbir Singh has been asked to submit his report within three weeks.

Sonia 20, a Dadumajra resident, had reportedly died with 95 per cent burns in just about a month of her marriage. Her parents had alleged that it was a dowry death. However, the police made no arrests.

Singh, when contacted, the High Court had instructed the IGP to verify and satisfy for himself the investigations. The earlier investigation conducted by a police officer had recommended cancellation of the case as she had committed suicide. It found that after being seen in a quot;compromisingquot; situation with her ex-boyfriend by her in-laws, she set herself afire.
