At a time when the BJP leadership has put the exit of Uma Bharati, Babulal Marandi and Madan Lal Khurana behind, former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has sounded a note of caution over this sense of self-complacency.

Delivering the valedictory address at the party8217;s national executive meeting here, Vajpayee said, 8216;8216;No outsider can be a threat to us, but if trouble breaks out from within, then there is certainly something amiss.8217;8217; In an apparent reference to the three former chief ministers, Vajpayee said though 8216;8216;not many people have left, every single person is useful.8217;8217; Therefore, one has to take note of it, he added.

Emphasising the importance of a free exchange of views, he said, 8216;8216;If people are not able to express their inner feelings in the atmosphere we create, then we should realise there is something lacking.8217;8217;

Alluding to continuous Left victories in West Bengal, he said the party should see why it could not do the same even though 8216;8216;we have more dedicated workers and have a wider base8217;8217;. Running a government, he maintained, was a difficult job and managing a coalition even more so. Even a small trouble gives rise to suspicion.

As if prompted by this remark, party general secretary Arun Jaitley announced later that co-ordination committees of the states ruled by the BJP alone or in alliance with other parties would meet in Delhi. Jaitley said the provision for the committees existed in the party constitution and the idea behind the meetings in Delhi was only to give an effective push to this mechanism.
