MUMBAI, SEPT 19: Somaiya College of Arts and Science defeated Elphinstone College in extra time to win the DSO Inter-schools U-19 Division title at Indian Gymkhana yesterday. Somaiya won 48-45, after Elphinstone had made a huge four-point play in the dying stages of regular time to level scores 40-40.

Somaiya, the favourites to win, started poorly with Umer Kazi missing three lay-ups. But some consistent work by Ralph Gomes gave them a 19-12 lead at half-time. The taller Elphinstone boys switched strategies, adopting a screen-and-roll gambit successfully. With 28 seconds left, Elphinstone trailed 36-40. Aijaz blundered with a foul on a three-point attempt. Rajnikant Acharya sunk two free throws. An offensive rebound of the third was then converted. Elphinstone had draw level. Aijaz made amends in extra time by contributing two baskets.

Boys (U-19) final: Somaiya 48 (Ralph Gomes 33, Aijaz Shaikh 11) bt Elphinstone 45 (Rajnikant Acharya 21) HT 17-12, FT 40-40.
