A frantic search for a snake in Soami Nagar revealed an unlikely hiding place: a washing machine. City animal rescue helpline run by Wildlife SOS got a call at 8.30 this morning from a family living in a first floor flat in Soami Nagar. A snake was spotted in their home.
As the men from Wildlife SOS searched the bathroom, they eventually found a small wolf snake in the family8217;s washing machine which had managed to climb up to the first floor. The snake was rescued unharmed after parts of the machine were dismantled.
Wolf snakes grow up to 18-24 inches 1.5-2 feet and are harmless. However, they resemble the poisonous krait and so should be handled only after identification. Snakes have been found in the unlikeliest of places in the city.
8220;We try to help every animal in need. We were happy we could rescue this snake! This incident proves once again that Delhi is a liveable habitat for snakes. On an average we get 4-7 calls a day, which usually results in one snake being rescued per day. Apart from this, we get about 2400 calls on snake sightings annually,8221; says Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder, Wildlife SOS.
And the washing machine hideout isn8217;t surprising, he says.
8220;Wolf snakes like damp places, which is perhaps why it went up the washing machine. But snakes when disturbed will usually go up any crevasse. We have rescued snakes from the 7th floor in flats in Mayur Vihar,8221; he says.
Earlier this year, a 6-foot long rat snake was rescued from the engine of a Honda car in Sainik Farms, after it went under the bonnet. A jet of water was directed at the car till the snake came out and was caught.
And last year, Wildlife SOS rescued a python from a DTC bus in Rajouri Garden.
