A trial court in Patna on Saturday awarded death sentence to six persons in connection with kidnapping and subsequent murder of a 13-year-old student, Sumit Kumar, in September 2004.
Sumit Kumar, a student of Class VII, was kidnapped for ransom from near his house in the Phulwarisharif area of Patna on September 21. A day later, police arrested one person involved in the kidnapping and based on his statement other culprits were identified. Fearing that they might be caught, the culprits killed the boy and threw his body inside the boundary wall of the airport nearby. Two days after the incident police arrested all those involved in the kidnapping and recovered the victim8217;s body.
Additional District Judge 1 Rampravesh Sharma found the six accused guilty of the crime. Barring one Gorakh Nath Singh, all those held guilty are in the age-group of 18-20 years. They were held guilty under different sections of the IPC8211;364A, kidnapping for ransom; 302, murder; and 120B, conspiracy.
In a state where kidnapping for ransom continues to be rampant this is a significant judgment and police officials feel that it will go a long way in deterring criminals from committing such heinous crimes. 8220;It is yet another result of the speedy trial drive launched by the state police. Now criminals cannot hope to go unpunished,8221; said Additional DG, Abhyanand, the man behind the speedy trial drive.
The case was initially under trial in the Session8217;s court and later transferred to ADJ Sharma8217;s court. So far, hundreds of such pending cases have been taken up for speedy trial under a drive launched by the Government.
