Six railway gangmen died on the spot when they were run over by the Allahabad-bound Sarnath Express around 11 am on Tuesday morning at Boghfam railway crossing between Maghiyari and Bargarh in Jhansi division of North Central Railways.
The deceased gangmen have been identified as Shiv Naresh, Hinchlal, Sobhalal, Bodhelal, Ram Gareeb and Bhagwandeen. Gangman Ramashre, who escaped unhurt and became the lone eyewitness, is in a state of shock.
He said seven of them were working on the track near the railway crossing where a goods train moved in from Allahabad on one track and the Sarnath Express going towards Allahabad on the other.
The gangmen and the guards on railway crossing duty could not see the Sarnath Express, resulting in the accident. The bodies of the gangmen were mutilated beyond recognition.
Till 1.30 pm no officer from the Jhansi division could reach the spot. However, Mau SDM S K Pathak and Bargarh Station Officer arrived at the spot and took stock of the situation.
Sources said the gangmen mistook the whistle of the Sarnath express for that of the goods train and shifted to the track on which the Sarnath Express was coming in.
North Central Railway chief PRO Rajesh Dutt Bajpai said the technical reason of the incident could only be ascertained after a high-level inquiry is completed. The GM NCR has ordered an inquiry into the incident and an immediate compensation of Rs 15,000 to the families of the deceased.
