Former prime minister Chandrashekar arrived in the state capital today, received at the airport by a sub-inspector on a motorbike who apologised for not being able to escort him out of the airport because there was no vehicle.

The mandatory security cover and car was not there and he had to wait till cadres of the Samajwadi Janata Party arranged for a car to take him to the VVIP guest house.

‘‘Sir, mere paas to sirf motorcycle hai. Poorva pradhanmantri ko kaise leke jayen? (I have only a motorcycle. How can I take the former Prime Minister?)’’ said the policeman who was asked to receive Chandrashekar.

Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav called on Chandrashekhar later in the day to apologise for the goof-up. The former PM did not, however, bring up the matter at the day’s press conference.

‘‘The government has been providing cars and security cover to mafia elements but it does not bother about protocol for a former PM. This is an insult of our national president,’’ said Jagdeep Yadav, state chief of the Samajwadi Janata Party.
