India down England, storm into Super Six
India pulled off a scintillating 63-run victory over hosts England in their do-or-die last group A8217; league tie which propelled them into the Super Six stage on better net run rate and put the hosts out of the World Cup. Riding high on sensational bowling performances, India withstood mounting pressure due to fickle weather and their own low total as they skittled out England for 169 in 45.2 overs, defending their score of 232 with tigerish resolve at the Warwickshire ground here.

White ball
It is significant that the 1999 World Cup logo features a fast bowler in his follow through, because the bowlers and the white ball appear to be dominating the tournament. Scores of 250 or more should be normal in a competition like this, as the world8217;s best batsmen and bowlers battle. But the reality is that in this World Cup, scores are much lower than in previous editions.

Full marks
Full marks to the India bowlers, especially the under-rated Saurav Ganguly. He hit the seam, moved the ball around appreciably, and was not only economical but found himself among wickets that were crucial for his side. Ganguly, in fact, has always proved to be a useful bowler whenever called upon to render his services. Unfortunately though, it has not been often enough.

Australia win
Australia defeated West Indies by six wickets to guarantee a place in the the second round of the World Cup. Sent into bat, the West Indies slumped to 110 all out in 46.4overs. In reply, Australia reached the target in the 41st over and finished at 111 for four.

Sucker punch
Zimbabwe delivered the sucker punch. And the South Africans who were hit by the sudden risein the level of intensity in an opposing side were unable to come back into a contest in which one team was keener than the other. The South Africans, who themselves thrive on intensity, were rocked by a side that proved it can also win through sheer vigour.
