
CHANDIGARH, May 11: Defending champions Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, St John8217;s High School, Sector 26 and St Soldiers International School, Sector 28 made it to the semifinals of the Chandigarh Mini football championship for the Shivalik Trophy under-12 on virtue of wins in respective quarterfinal matches here at the Sector 17 Football Stadium today.
Shivalik Public School beat Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 15 2-0 in the first quarterfinal. Shivalik Public School shot into early lead when right half Bhupinder Singh8217;s powerful kick beat the goalkeeper in the very second minute of the game.
If Shivalik Public School expected a cakewalk after this they were mistaken as the GSSS-15 lads put up brave resistance. They did not allow free space to the Shivalik lads and frustrated their forwards. GSSS-15 too had a couple of close chances but the rival custodian thwarted them.
The score remained 1-0 In Shivalik8217;s favour till the half-time.
On resumption, the two teams again countered the other with tight defence. However, Shivalik Public School ensured their entry in to the last four stage when right striker Sahil Mehta scored the second goal in the 55th minute.
Guru Nanak Public School routed Sharda Saravhitkari School, Sector 40 4-1 in another quarterings match after being tied 1-1 at half time.
Guru Nanak Public School were on the offensive from the kick-off itself. They put the first goal on the board in the 11th minute when right striker Gurpreet Singh scored entirely with his own effort. A defence lapse by Guru Nanak Public School resulted in a counter attack by it8217;s opponents. Right half Varun capitalized on this and scored the equaliser in the 15th minute.
After the lemon break, Guru Nanak Public lads were on a goal scoring spree. They pumped in three goals in six minutes. Gurpreet scored his second goal in the 24th minute, followed by a brace by Anninder Pal Singh 26th and 30th minute.
St Soldiers School beat Guru Teg Bahadur Public School 4-1 via tie-breaker after the regulation period failed to produce any goal. St Soldiers8217; players missed one penalty kick while the Teg Bahadur lads missed four, scoring only once. They thus, lost the tie-breaker as well as the match 1-4.
The last quarterfinal match between St John8217;s High School and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22 saw St John8217;s emerging winners by two goals to nil.
St John8217;s were one-nil up in the third minute itself when right striker Pruthi Gauhar scored a brilliant goal. Continuing with their dominance they increased the lead 2-0 as right half Rahul scored in the 16th minute.
