India8217;s campaign in the Winter Olympics has began on a sour note. First, its most experienced athlete Shiva Keshavan pulled out of the opening ceremony citing apathy and incompetence of officials accompanying the Indian contingent.
Then, in his opening run, in the luge men8217;s final first run, Keshavan finished a poor 30th, with a timing of 53.729 seconds, a full 2.011 seconds off top finisher Armin Zoeggeler of Italy 51.718. Russsian Albert Demtschenko finished second and German Georg Hackl third. There are three more races to go in this final.
Keshavan was slated to be India8217;s flag-bearer, but was said to be shocked when he was informed of 8220;a change in plan8221; at the last minute before last night8217;s ceremony in Turin. He boycotted the ceremony as a sign of protest against the officials who have 8220;always discouraged me from continuing the sport and disclaiming responsibility for any training and travelling expenses and eventual mishaps and nonetheless shamelessly showing up to the Olympic village upon my qualification.8221;8217;
Without naming the Winter Games Federation of India, he also alleged that the officials were responsible for stealing and diverting funds sanctioned for him for personal gain.
8220;The incompetence of the organising personnel that have done nothing to provide the basic services needed for athletes for the Olympic Games8221; had forced him to take the step, he said in a statement.
