Still celebrating his honeymoon, Greg Norman turned back the clock at the British Open, a major he won two times in his prime but never thought was still there for the taking at age 53.
For the second straight round, Norman matched par with a 70 at a brutally tough Royal Birkdale and will head to the weekend one off the lead. Korean KJ Choi sank timely birdies on the last two holes to storm up the leaderboard and be the only name above Norman. Choi, who shot four-under for the day is one-under 139, the only under par score at the midway stage.
8220;My expectations were almost nil coming in, to tell you the truth,8221; said Norman, who married former tennis great Chris Evert three weeks ago.
With 36 holes to go, Norman still considers himself the longest of long shots, and he8217;s got players half his age 8212; such as 26-year-old Camilo Villegas, who shot the best round yet with a brilliant five-under 65.
Still, it was amazing to see Norman8217;s name atop the leaderboard at a tournament he won in 1986 at Turnberry and then again in at Royal St George8217;s seven years later.
With no offence to Norman8217;s steady play, no one was hotter Friday than Villegas, who started his round with two bogeys but closed with five straight birdies 8212; rolling in putts of 16, 6, 16, 3 and 20 feet.
The charismatic Colombian had eight birdies overall. He capped his amazing run at the end by striking the flagstick with his approach at No. 18, then sinking the putt after the ball ricocheted onto the fringe.
Meanwhile, champion Padraig Harrington, helped by a 35-foot eagle putt at the 17th, picked up four shots in the last four holes to storm into contention. Despite nursing an injury to his right wrist, the Irishman also birdied the 15th and the last to fire a two-under-par 68.
Several big names were in danger of missing the cut as the second round was yet unfinished. With the projected cut at nine-over, Vijay Singh, with his 11-over was surely going home early along with Angel Cabrera.
Phil Mickelson8217;s four-under in the easier conditions of the afternoon meant he was finally safe with aggregate seven-over.
