S.A.S. NAGAR, July 24: The local unit of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee SGPC and other religious organisations will take out a procession defying the state government8217;s decision of implementing the directives of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to make wearing of helmets compulsory for women. Stating this here today, SGPC member Hardeep Singh said that the procession, in which couples associated with the SGPC, Istri Sabha, Sukhmani Society and Gurmat Chetna Committee among other religious wings, would start at Phase-XI Gurdwara and terminate at Phase-VI Gurdwara.
He said that the expenditure to be incurred on challaning, if any, would be borne by the religious organisations and added that the people should come forward fearlessly and join in the procession to make it a success.
Reacting to this, SP Traffic Narender Singh Bhargawa said that the drive to make wearing of helmets compulsory would be launched from tomorrow all over Roopnagar district in compliance with the High Court directive.
Two-wheeler riders would be challaned if they were found violating the directive, Bhargawa said and appealed to the people to wear helmets and make driving on roads safe. Traffic cops will be deployed at all entry points, crossings and roundabouts, besides traffic points of the district for ensuring implementation of the HC directives, he reiterated.
Meanwhile a dharna was organised by Sikh Nari Manchin Chandigarh today in protest against the decicion of the Punjab and Haryuana High Court making helmets mandatory for people riding two-wheeler including those on the pillion.
According to city deputy mayor and Manch president Harjudner Kaur, this is an attack on an individual8217;s freedom. quot;Religious freedom is our fundamental right and our religion doesn8217;t allow wearing of caps, quot; she said.
About 150 women sat on dharna at the plaza and raised slogans for about an hour-and-a-half this afternoon.
They plan to drive two-wheelers sans helmets tomorrow even as the traffic police has decided to challan all two-wheel riders without helmets.
