DERA BASSI, Jan 4: SGPC chief and Rajya Shabha member Gurcharan Singh Tohra today contested Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal8217;s statement over the status of SGPC and held that the SGPC could not be viewed as a part of the Akali Dal.

Talking to media persons after laying the foundation stone of langar hall of the historic Nabha Sahib Gurdwara near Zirakpur on the Kalka-Patiala highway, Tohra said, 8220;The SGPC representing Sikhs in general is the only supreme8217; body and could not be divided on political considerations. The Akali Dal can be divided into different segments, but not the SGPC.8221; The foundation stone laying ceremony was organised on the eve of Guru Gobind Singh8217;s birth day.

Parrying questions, Tohra refused to comment on the ongoing tussle with the Badal camp till April 15 since a hukamnama8217; had been issued to that effect by the Akal Takht.

He also denied having demanded the resignation of Badal from the post of party president. 8220;I only suggested to find out a responsible man within the party who can devote maximum time to deal with the party matter independently.8221; All allegations being levelled against him were baseless and politically motivated, he added.

While releasing a calendar depicting Sikh history on the occasion, Tohra said that the management of this historic gurdwara would soon be brought under the control of SGPC. 8220;Religion and politics are parts of life and could not be separated, 8216; he said.

P.S. Chandumajra, MP, who accompanied the SGPC chief, visited 12 villages adjoining Zirakpur and distributed Rs 9 lakh from his discretionary fund for the welfare and an all-round development of these villages. Earlier, Tohra presented siropas to certain residents of the area. Prominent among those who were present on the occasion were Akali leader Amrik Singh Malakpur, Dhyan Singh Jharmari, Harvinder Singh Mohali, Kartar Singh Bhogla, Gurnam Singh and Bhupinder Saini. Tohra also led the Khalsa Chetna Morcha organised on the occasion.
